It is never too early to look after your skin. Whilst some people may see skincare and moisturising as something for when you are older and your skin already shows signs of ageing, the earlier you start to take care of your skin, the better.
What are the causes of skin-ageing?
Our skin is subjected to a whole host of environmental stressors on a daily basis, from UV exposure to extreme weather and pollution and as we age, our skin starts to show the signs of damage. In our twenties, the sun damage often caused in our teenage and younger years starts to catch up with us and shows in our skin by way of pigmentation and fine lines. It’s at this age you may notice first signs of skin ageing such as makeup showing in fine lines and creases within your skin particularly around the sensitive eye area.
Regardless of your genes, skin ageing happens to all of us and is caused by a mix of both internal and external factors including lifestyle habits such as sleep, smoking, sun exposure, diet and how we look after our skin. Whilst there has always been debate around whether nature or nurture play the biggest role when it comes to ageing, Olay’s study with over 155,000 participants found that how you take care of your skin (nurture) played more of a role than genetics (nature) when it comes to successful skin ageing.
The study, which was run with personal genetics company 23andMe revealed that whilst some 8% of us are lucky enough to be ‘exceptional skin agers’ (looking at least ten years or more younger than their actual age), this is not primarily down to the genes we are born with and means that with the right skincare and lifestyle choices, women can take control to achieve exceptional skin ageing2 to keep skin looking younger for longer.
How does our skin age?
From our late twenties onwards, our skin cell turnover slows and our skin’s natural production of collagen (which provides firmness and strength) and elastin (which helps your skin to stretch and ‘bounce back’) decline. The natural loss of cell turnover leaves a dull and often uneven skin tone which can also result in a rough texture causing an overall loss of skin’s natural glow.

What are the signs of skin ageing?
- Fine lines and wrinkles, particularly in areas of your face which experience more facial movement such as between the brows, around the eye area and the forehead
- Dry, patchy skin
- Loss of volume with skin sagging particularly in the neck area
- Dark spots known as hyperpigmentation
- Enlarged pores
- Dark circles around the eye area
- Loss of skin’s natural glow
What skincare habits should you adopt to fight skin ageing?
Whilst it is never too late to start a skincare regime, the earlier you adopt skincare habits and look after your skin, the better it will look as it ages. Whilst skin ageing is a natural part of life, you can hold back some of the signs by looking after your skin and using anti-ageing skincare. And by the way – contrary to a popular myth, skin does not become ‘lazy’ or ‘immune’ to skincare if you start at a young age! As well as products, there are also a number of ways of also putting off the signs of premature ageing and these include:
- Staying out of the sun during the hours of 12-3pm in the summer (even if wearing a moisturiser with SPF)
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet – nourish yourself from the inside
- Avoiding smoking
- Regular exercise to boost the circulatory system
- Avoid repeated facial expressions which can cause deep wrinkles (such as frowning)
Although anti-ageing creams can’t miraculously make you look decades younger overnight, they can work to help reduce the signs of ageing over time and help delay wrinkles from appearing.
Olay recommends a daily moisturiser with SPF to help protect against UV and environmental damage and suggests Total Effects SPF30. For overnight, Olay recommends Regenerist 3 Point Age - Defying Moisturiser Night Cream to intensively hydrate your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles whilst you sleep. For the sensitive eye area, Olay recommends Pro-Retinol Eye Treatment, our best wrinkle-fighting technology with Pro-Retinol and Pentapeptides. It smooths the look of even deep wrinkles.
