We’ve all got a friend who looks years younger than her age and we might think it’s down to her lucky DNA – but what is DNA and does it really matter in the search of how to look younger?
Our DNA is the very essence of who we are, it is what’s carried in our genes and is what determines the structure and function of every cell in our bodies, and it is responsible for the characteristics passed on from parent to child.
Olay conducted its biggest science study to find out the answer to beauty’s holy grail question – is it nature (pre-determined by your DNA and the genes you’re born with) or is it nurture (lifestyle factors that you can influence) that’s most important when it comes to having younger-looking skin?
The good news is that the clinical trials revealed that you don’t need good genes to have younger-looking skin – it’s how you treat your skin that matters most.
In this breakthrough study where the skin of women from a wide age range were compared, it was discovered that around 8% of women are “exceptional skin agers” – women who have skin that looks ten or more years younger than their actual age1. Olay then partnered with personal genetics company, 23andMe in a study involving over 150,000 participants to analyse what impact lifestyle factors had on these “exceptional skin agers”.
What these younger-looking women had in common was that they almost always used SPF, indicating the importance of incorporating facial moisturisers with sunscreens in your daily routine. Other external factors having a positive impact on skin age include being active with high energy, taking regular exercise, living in an urban area, having 8 or more hours sleep a night and multi-vitamin usage.
Conversely, women who regularly sunbathed were 35% less likely to be “exceptional skin agers”, and women who suffer from dry skin were 30% less likely to have “exceptional” skin. Smoking and pollution also have a negative impact on perceived skin age.
So what’s really exciting about this study is that we have much more control over our skin’s visible age than we may previously have thought, starting with an effective anti-ageing skincare regimen with sun protection that also rejuvenates skin cells in the skin’s epidermis (skin’s top layers)With these findings Olay has re-engineered some of the most popular skin care products within Olay Regenerist, Olay Luminous and Olay Total Effects with ingredients to support younger looking skin.
Is it DNA or Olay? Your skin will never tell.
